In Micah 6–7 a series of rhetorical questions are asked to determine if God will be mollified and withhold judgment and exile if the people make offerings and sacrifices “with thousands of rams and ten thousand rivers of oil” (Mic. 6:7). The implied answer to all of these is “no,” as the next verse makes clear. Not even if the people were to offer their firstborn children as an ultimate sacrifice would the LORD be satisfied.
